esse supports earth day 2012

On April 22, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day 2012. People of all nationalities and backgrounds will voice their appreciation for the planet and demand its protection.

At Esse we are passionate about the environment and continuously strive towards ensuring sustainability throughout our product development actions.

Our environmental policy can be summed up by a quote from the book “Cradle to Cradle” by William McDonough and Michael Braungart
“For the children of all species, for all time.”

Nature is not only something to be cherished and protected. It should be emulated as a model of sustainability. As such, Esse is determined to align itself with and implement a ‘cradle to cradle’ design principle. We are committed to:

  • Creating awareness of the enormous resource of Africa’s plant diversity and active involvement in biodiversity conservation. Esse is making an effort to retain genetic diversity of plants that are under particular threat.
  • Being conscious of the manner in which raw materials are sourced.
  • Supporting local, environmentally conscious entrepreneurial projects that offer social, environmental and biodiversity protection.
  • Sourcing locally wherever possible and always giving preference to locally available materials, suppliers and ingredients.
  • Considering carbon footprint and environmental consequences in every purchase, marketing project and administration decision.
Earth Day encourages us to find something environmental that you are passionate about (no matter how small or big it is), and do it! Together we can all make a difference.

bottle recycling

In an effort to reduce wastage of energy in the recycling of our glass packaging we have instituted a policy that allows clients to return their used packaging to their stockist and receive free product in exchange.

Our stockists then return the packaging to us and we sterilise it and reuse it. It is a simple, cheap and effective way to ensure minimum environmental impact. The alternative is that the packaging would be recycled after substantial consumption of energy in transport and processing. This form is far more direct. We save on packaging and pass the saving onto you in the form of free product.

Please contact us on info@esse.co.za to find out more on how to take part.

home grown

At Esse we believe in controlling your food source as much as possible. We therefore made our own office “community” vegetable garden. We started at the beginning of this year and in a couple of months we’re up and running – a functional greenhouse and a shadecloth tunnel to keep the monkeys at bay. It’ll grow from there but already the whole office is sorted for salad and herbs. Starches next and then the niceties like berries and fruit. The goal is to eat exclusively from the garden by the end of the year.
